Alberta Road Test Vehicle Inspection Requirements

When you arrive at a Calgary registry for your Class 5 road test, the examiner's first task is to ensure the vehicle you are using is safe and legally compliant. You must provide a vehicle that meets all Alberta Transportation safety standards.

If any required component is missing or malfunctioning, the examiner is required to refuse the test. You will lose your road test appointment slot and will not be issued a refund by the registry.

The Pre-Test Safety Checklist

Before the examiner gets in the car, they will ask you to demonstrate that the following equipment is fully operational:

1. Brake Lights and Turn Signals: Both the left and right signal lights (front and rear) must flash clearly. All brake lights, including the center high-mount brake light, must illuminate when the pedal is pressed.
2. Headlights and Taillights: Must be fully functional.
3. Horn: The horn must be audible and function when pressed.
4. Speedometer: Must be working correctly to ensure you can monitor speed limits.
5. Windshield and Wipers: The windshield must provide an unobstructed view. Large cracks in the driver's line of sight or spider-webbing cracks will result in a refusal. Windshield wipers and washer fluid must operate correctly.
6. Tires and Brakes: Tires must have adequate tread and cannot be space-saver spare tires (donuts). Brakes must function safely without excessive noise or pulling.
7. Doors and Seats: The examiner's door must open from both the inside and outside. The examiner's seat must be secure, and the seatbelt must function properly.
8. Cleanliness: The passenger area must be reasonably clean and free of loose debris or garbage that could interfere with the examiner's workspace or the vehicle's pedals.

Documentation Requirements

In addition to physical vehicle safety, you must present the examiner with valid, original documentation for the vehicle. Photocopies or digital photos are strictly not accepted.

• Valid vehicle registration certificate.
• Valid Alberta motor vehicle insurance card (pink card) matching the vehicle.
• Your valid Class 7 Learner's Licence or Class 5 GDL (if taking the advanced test).
